Newegg Entering Textbook Biz

Newegg.com is doubling down on the educational channel.

Two months after launching a dedicated discount site for students, the nation’s largest tech specialty e-tailer is adding textbooks to its largely CE and IT assortment.

“Newegg has long been the go-to destination for tech-savvy students, so it’s only natural we include textbooks in our offering to them,” said James Wu, COO of Newegg North America. “Students can visit Newegg not just to serve their technology needs, but also for great deals on the textbooks that complement their coursework.”

The company said the addition of high school and college texts is part of a broader effort to expand its product portfolio and tap into alternate channels. The latter include the business and government segments, for which the company recently introduced a dedicated loyalty program and private-label PC line.

Students are also being courted with discounted membership in Newegg’s Premier customer benefit program, and a separate “student deals” promotional site, where textbooks can be researched and ordered.
