Platinum Equity Invests In Grand Appliance, Expanding Independent Appliance Distribution Platform

Investment reflects a broader trend reshaping the appliance channel

The appliance industry’s distribution landscape is entering a new era of consolidation as companies look for greater scale, stronger logistics capabilities and expanded geographic reach to compete in an increasingly demanding marketplace.

The latest example is Platinum Equity’s investment in Grand Appliance, a leading Midwest appliance retailer and distributor, which will expand the firm’s independent appliance platform following its acquisition of California-based R&B Wholesale Distributors in 2025. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1930, Grand Appliance is a fourth-generation family-owned business with a long history of customer service, operational expertise and strong supplier relationships. The company operates 31 retail locations and five distribution centers across Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa, serving consumers, builders, contractors, and online customers through its retail, distribution and e-commerce channels.

Over nearly a century, Grand has evolved from a traditional appliance retailer into a diversified business with showroom sales, delivery, installation, distribution and omnichannel capabilities — assets that have become increasingly valuable as consumers and trade professionals demand faster fulfillment and a seamless shopping experience.

Under the agreement, Grand Appliance will join forces with R&B Wholesale Distributors to create what the companies describe as one of the nation’s largest independent appliance distribution platforms. The businesses will continue operating under their existing brands and leadership teams while sharing resources, operational expertise and best practices.

Grand President Anish Gauri will expand his role and serve as Chief Executive Officer of both Grand Appliance and R&B Wholesale Distributors.

“This partnership brings together two highly respected family businesses with deep legacies and distinct strengths to create one of the largest independent appliance distribution platforms in the country,” said Jacob Kotzubei, Co-President of Platinum Equity. “By building on a shared foundation, we see an opportunity to support continued growth while preserving the values that have defined each company.”

Founded in 1995 by Tom Gores, Platinum Equity is a global investment firm focused on acquiring and operating businesses across multiple industries. The firm’s strategy centers on combining acquisitions with operational expertise, including supply chain improvements, logistics, technology investments and organizational efficiency.

Dan Krasner, Managing Director at Platinum Equity, said Grand’s established platform and reputation made the company an attractive investment opportunity.

“Grand has built an impressive omnichannel platform, with a leading showroom model, growing e-commerce platform, and reputation for customer service that dates back nearly 100 years,” said Krasner. “We see meaningful opportunities for expansion going forward.”

The Grand Appliance investment reflects a broader trend reshaping the appliance channel: scale matters.

Today’s appliance distributors are no longer simply moving products from manufacturers to retailers. Successful organizations require sophisticated inventory management, regional warehousing, delivery capabilities, installation expertise, digital commerce platforms and strong relationships across the channel.

Those investments require capital, and established regional companies with strong brands and operational foundations are increasingly becoming attractive platforms for growth.

The key question for the industry will be whether consolidation creates stronger businesses that continue investing in people, technology and customer experience — or whether it becomes focused primarily on financial returns.

Grand Appliance represents an interesting case study because Platinum Equity is combining two established operators while maintaining their brands, leadership teams and market identities.

For manufacturers, retailers and consumers, the long-term success of this partnership will be measured not simply by the size of the organization, but by whether it creates a stronger independent platform that continues delivering value throughout the appliance ecosystem.
