Mio Demos Internet-PND

Fremont Calif. — Mio announced it will offer an Internet-connected personal navigation device (PND) by the end of this year, joining other PND makers who are racing to add cellular connections to their PNDs to provide new features.

Mio said it teamed with telematics provider ATX to offer weather and traffic updates targeted to the user’s route path, as well as updated point of interest information. It achieves through an embedded GSM modem.

Mio joins other Internet-connected PNDs announced by Dash Navigation, Magellan, Garmin and TomTom (in Europe).

ATX, based in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas and Dusseldorf, Germany, claims to be the largest global provider of personalized telematics services to the auto industry.
