Magnetar Ships Updated MKII Players

New refinements target better audio, stability, and format support across both models

Magnetar’s latest universal media players, the UDP900MKII and UDP800MKII, are now officially shipping following their first appearance at CEDIA Expo 2025. The updated MKII lineup builds on the company’s earlier UDP900 and UDP800 models, incorporating refinements based on user and integrator feedback.

Both new units continue to support a wide range of media, including 4K UHD discs, Blu-ray, SACD, and locally stored or networked files. Magnetar has updated its proprietary processing engine, aiming for improvements in color accuracy, contrast handling, and video upscaling. Noise reduction has also been refined, targeting cleaner playback across formats.

Audio performance was a primary focus of the upgrade cycle. The MKII hardware includes redesigned circuitry intended to reduce distortion and improve channel separation in high-resolution playback. Updated USB 3.0 ports now feature an isolated power design and dedicated hub chips, which may improve compatibility with external storage devices and DACs.

Mechanical changes include a sound-dampened optical transport system designed to reduce disc-read noise, along with a reinforced metal chassis with shielding intended to reduce interference during playback.

The flagship UDP900MKII features dual ESS 9038 Pro DACs and TMDS HDMI retiming aimed at reducing jitter in dedicated audio output. It also includes expanded network and USB audio support, offering playback of formats up to 768kHz PCM and DSD512.

Positioned beneath it, the UDP800MKII introduces a reworked analog audio section using OPA1602 op-amps, upgraded shielding, and an improved disc mechanism. While not as feature-rich as the flagship model, it retains broad format compatibility and targets enthusiasts looking for premium performance at a lower cost.

The UDP900MKII launches at $3,299.99, while the UDP800MKII is priced at $1,799.99. Both are available through Magnetar and authorized dealers.
