DirecTV Preparing For Live 4K Sports Broadcasts

DirecTV is testing Ultra HD 4K transmission of live sports events and plans to launch 4K broadcasts in early 2016, a news report  says.

The satellite-TV company has been offering 4K programs, including newly released movies, on an over-the-top basis via its Internet-connected Genie HD DVR.

DirecTV senior VP Phil Goswitz told a conference in New York that DirecTV could launch 50 UHD channels today at 30Mbps to complement its existing HD and SD channels. Technical challenges had largely been solved, he said. “There are only three questions – where’s the content? Where’s the damn content? Where’s the goddamn content?” he asked.

“Forty percent of people are going to have UHD TVs coming out of Christmas, and they are going to be looking for something to watch,” he said. “Our goal is to have them tuned to DirecTV and have as much linear live content, especially sports content, as soon as possible.”

The company recently launched several satellites to support 4K and HD broadcasts.
