Hong Kong’s Evolution As A Trade Powerhouse: An Interview With Silas Chu

Hong Kong remains an essential destination for professionals worldwide

Silas Chu

Hong Kong has consistently positioned itself as a hub of global trade and innovation. I recently had the privilege of speaking with Silas Chu, Director of Exhibitions and Digital Business at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), about the city’s evolution, its trade fair initiatives, and the growing global opportunities it enables.

A Legacy of Reinvention

“Over the years, Hong Kong has reinvented itself,” Chu began. “We started as entrepreneurs for trading, but now, we’ve focused on broader economic development and innovation. Just in the past couple of years, we’ve launched a range of impactful products for the B2B market in areas like consumer technology and appliances, aimed at retailers, distributors, and manufacturers.”

Chu highlighted Hong Kong’s ability to stay ahead in an ever-changing global market by fostering connections and continuously adapting to new trends.

Trade Fairs: A Global Gateway

One of Hong Kong’s unique strengths lies in its trade fairs, which are renowned for their scale and scope. “For example, our two April tech fairs last year including InnoEX and Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) attracted some 88,000 buyers and featured around 3,000 exhibitors,” Chu shared. “We’ve also introduced innovations like ‘scan to match,’ enabling participants to bookmark exhibitors, revisit profiles, and even schedule online appointments to streamline their experience using our mobile app.”

Chu emphasized that these events are about more than just sourcing products. “Our trade fairs are knowledge hubs,” he said. “We invite industry leaders to speak on pressing topics like cybersecurity and SME solutions, helping businesses stay informed and competitive. It’s about empowering participants with the latest trends and strategies.”

Lighting and Smart Home Integration

A key trend Chu noted was the growing intersection of lighting and consumer electronics. This is particularly relevant in the U.S. market, where smart home solutions are gaining traction. “We see a growing appetite for innovative lighting models that not only enhance energy efficiency but also promote eco-friendliness,” Chu explained. “That’s why we host lighting fairs twice a year, to meet the increasing demand from traders and importers.”

Chu also observed that U.S. retailers are evolving business models, incorporating design offices to work directly with interior designers. “Lighting has become an integral part of the smart home package, contributing to both environmental sustainability and support wellness living by enhancing mood and promoting health, and we’re seeing retailers leverage this by offering comprehensive solutions,” he added.

Hong Kong: A City of Connections

Beyond its trade fairs, Hong Kong itself is a vibrant, cosmopolitan destination. “Hong Kong is among the top five cities globally for Michelin-starred restaurants,” Chu noted. “The diversity is incredible—not just Chinese cuisine but also Italian, French, Japanese, and more.”

Chu also highlighted how Hong Kong fosters unexpected connections. “Many of our visitors find themselves bumping into industry peers at events, leading to valuable relationship-building moments. It’s part of what makes Hong Kong special.”

Looking Ahead

As our conversation concluded, Chu reflected on Hong Kong’s continued commitment to innovation and connectivity. “Our goal is to keep raising the bar. By combining cutting-edge trade fairs with a rich cultural backdrop, Hong Kong remains an essential destination for professionals worldwide.”

For me, Hong Kong represents more than just a business opportunity—it’s a city of inspiration and connection. Every visit leaves me with new insights and stronger relationships. With the next trade fair just around the corner in April, I encourage everyone in the industry to explore what Hong Kong has to offer.

Four major HKTDC-organized technology exhibitions are set to take place in April. Through these events, HKTDC aims to help promote innovative solutions and develop Hong Kong as an international I&T hub. By facilitating networking opportunities and the exchange of ideas, these exhibitions will highlight the region’s strengths and attract global talent and investment, driving future growth and development.
