Prime Day Breaks Amazon Sales Records

Amazon said yesterday’s Prime Day sales promotion raked in more revenue than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.

The 30-hour haul was up by more than 60 percent from last year’s sales event, with 50 percent more Prime members participating, making it “the biggest day ever in Amazon history,” the company said.

The e-tailer’s Echo Dot smart speaker was the best-selling product of Prime Day (reduced $15 to $35), while a half-off sale on the classic Amazon Echo, to $90, and $20 off the Fire 7 tablet, to $30, helped drive record sales-event volume for the entire Amazon device family.

Another house record was set by the new Element 55-inch 4K Ultra HD LED TV – Amazon Fire TV Edition, which the company described as its best-selling TV deal ever, selling record units in less than four hours.

“To those customers who tried Prime for the first time and our long time members, thank you for a great Prime Day,” said Amazon Prime VP Greg Greeley.

And thanking Greg Greeley, perhaps, are myriad retailers who rode Amazon’s coattails with their own Prime counter-promotions, and were likely beneficiaries of Amazon’s spillover traffic.
