Global TV shipments are expected to decline 1% in 2027, but the premium segment is forecast to move in the opposite direction, according to Omdia’s latest TV market research.

Omdia projects shipments of TVs with an average selling price above $1,000 will increase 9.3% year over year in 2027. North America is expected to post the strongest growth, with premium TV shipments projected to rise 21.9%.

The forecasts are included in Omdia’s 2Q26 TV Sets Forecast Database and point to a continued shift in manufacturers’ product strategies toward higher-value models as overall demand slows.

Memory Costs Pressure Entry-Level TVs

Rising component costs, including memory, are putting additional pressure on manufacturers’ margins, particularly in lower-priced models.

For a 65-inch LCD TV selling for $300, even a several-dollar increase in memory costs can have a meaningful impact on profitability or require a higher retail price. The same cost increase represents a smaller share of the selling price for a premium TV.

With component supplies constrained, manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing premium models, according to Omdia.

“Component supply constraints are influencing TV manufacturers’ product strategies,” said Patrick Horner, Practice Leader | TV Set Research – Consumer at Omdia. ” Rising memory prices put additional pressure on low-margin models, encouraging brands to prioritize premium TVs. Display innovations such as RGB LED backlights support this strategy by giving consumers a clearer reason to upgrade. ”

RGB LED Gains Ground

Display technology is also expected to play a role in the premium segment’s growth. Omdia forecasts RGB LED backlights will account for 49% of global premium TV revenue by 2030.

RGB LED backlight architectures are being developed to improve color volume, local dimming precision and peak brightness, giving manufacturers additional ways to differentiate higher-priced models.

By comparison, LCD TVs using conventional backlights are projected to account for just 2% of premium TV revenue in 2030.

The projections suggest that while the overall TV market faces slower unit demand, manufacturers may increasingly rely on premium models and display technology upgrades to support revenue growth. North America is expected to remain a key market for that strategy, with its 21.9% projected increase in premium TV shipments in 2027.
