DirecTV Adds New Sports Channels

New York — DirecTV said it has reached deals to add the SportsNet New York (SNY) and Sports Time Ohio (STO) regional sports channels to its programming lineup, starting this week.

DirecTV was to begin offering STO’s coverage of the Cleveland Indians and other Northern Ohio-area sporting events, on channel 657 beginning Tuesday, April 4.

One day later, the direct broadcast satellite operator said it would begin transmitting SNY on channel 625, carrying select New York Mets games to viewers living in the New York City area, and off-season news coverage of the New York Jets football team.

Both channels were available at no additional charge to subscribers of DirecTV’s Total Choice programming service living within the geographic footprint of the sports franchises.

DirecTV will also offer SNY and STO as part of its SPORTS Pack, which is available a la carte throughout the United States to all DirecTV customers.

The deals also allow DirecTV to carry select games in high definition to DirecTV’s HDTV subscribers living in the area of the local sports teams, the satellite company said.

Meanwhile, EchoStar said it added games broadcast by STO to its DISH Network service over the weekend. A spokesman said DISH will only show games from STO to Cleveland-area viewers subscribing to its America’s Top 60 Plus or higher programming tier. No announcement was made about carrying HD game coverage from the channel.

The spokesman said EchoStar continues to talk with other sports channels services, including SNY, but no decisions had been made at press time.
