Reston, Va. – Video gaming was the fastest-growing category within the online retail channel during the second quarter of 2007.
According to comScore, which tracks the browsing and transaction behavior of more than 2 million consumers, e-tail sales of gaming gear grew 159 percent during the three-month period, fueled by strong demand for Nintendo Wii and PlayStation III consoles, software and accessories.
Consumer electronics (excluding PC peripherals) ranked third — after sports and fitness — growing 51 percent year-over-year.
Music, movies and videos came in seventh with 24 percent growth, followed by computer software with 23 percent growth.
Total e-tail sales grew 23 percent to $27.2 billion during the quarter, comScore said, and total U.S. online consumer spending is projected to breach the $200 billion-mark this year.
