Seoul, South Korea – LG is planning to soon announce a decision that many felt was inevitable, and join Panasonic and Samsung in exiting production of plasma TVs.
According to reports in the Korean Times, LG’s president acknowledged that it is now studying when it should halt further plasma TV production.
The report said Ha Hyun-hwoi, LG Electronics home entertainment president, made the revelation during a media event in Korea this week to discuss its new OLED TV business, essentially confirming what display experts had been expecting.
Hyun-hwoi told reporters to expect an announcement on the issue in the future.
The decision follows LG’s aggressive rollout of new large-screen Ultra HD OLED TVs that will be given a formal send off at the IFA Show in Berlin in the next few days.
The company also recently launched a 55-inch curved screen FullHD OLED at a $3,499 suggested retail.
Panasonic has already exited the plasma production business and Samsung is scheduled to shut down its PDP production in November.
Chinese manufacturer Changhong Electric is the only other manufacturer of plasma displays left, but those products have not made it to the U.S.
