CEATEC Products Hint At Things To Come

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/24/2005

MAKUHARI, Japan — The recent 2005 CEATEC Show, held here, offered a showcase of some new technologies that may be coming to U.S. retailers in the year ahead.

One of the more dominant trends at the show saw manufacturers stepping up flat-panel TV technologies to deliver fully 1,080p (1,920 by 1,080) “full high-definition” resolution. Panasonic showed 1,080p plasma models in the 65W-inch and 50W-inch screen sizes, while Sharp showed its 65W-inch LCD version, which was previously shown at International CES.

Another 1,080p flat-panel contender will come from the surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) technology, which is being pioneered by Toshiba and Canon. Both company's jointly showed 36W-inch (720p) prototype displays of the technology, which promises CRT-like picture performance in a flat-panel form factor. But the companies expect to have 1,080p versions with over 50W-inch screen sizes for market some time next year.

The following are images of a few of the more interesting video highlights from the recent CEATEC showcase.
