Sharp To License Elite Brand For LCD TVs
By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 1/27/2011
Mahwah, N.J. - The Pioneer Elite brand is returning to flat-screen TV.Pioneer announced Thursday that the U.S. subsidiary Sharp will license Pioneer's Elite brand for a line of high-end flat-panel displays to be introduced in the U.S. and Canada this year.
Currently, Pioneer uses the Elite brand to market a line of high-end audio/video receivers, Blu-ray Disc players and speakers.
Model details, pricing and availability were not disclosed.
Sharp hopes that by adopting the brand for high-end LCD TVs, it will be able to expand distribution of its premium large-scale TVs into high-end specialty A/V dealers and other accounts with assisted sales floors.
Pioneer said it will gain by adding large-screen LCD TVs to the market to complement its Pioneer's Elite home-theater components.
The Elite line of LCD TVs will be jointly marketed by Sharp and Pioneer, and will be available through Pioneer's authorized Elite dealer network, the companies said.
Sharp holds an equity investment in Pioneer.
"As a leader in large-screen LCD TV, we are excited to collaborate with Pioneer to bring a high-end LCD TV to the Elite consumer," stated John Herrington, Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America president. "The Elite brand is highly respected in the high-end market, and Sharp can deliver the quality and innovation that Elite customers demand."
"Adding a line of high-end flat-panel TVs fills a market need in the industry and will help reinforce the strength of a complete Elite home-theater offering," said Russ Johnston, Pioneer USA home electronics department executive VP. "With its cutting-edge LCD technology and unmatched production capabilities, Sharp is an important strategic collaborator that will deliver a whole new dimension to the large-screen home-theater experience."

if sharp is going to fund the production of the elite series of tv's they should at least keep them the plasmas that they were instead of ruining them with an inferior technology. it is a total waste of time and money to do that. look forward to sharp ruining another piece of technology.

What's the difference? Pioneer bought JVC's projector (all be it a good one) slapped the Elite name on it and charged more for it. I hope for Pioneer's sake that the TVs are of excellent quality. Maybe Sharp will produce a new Kuro plasma (licensed back from Panny).
Hey, isn't Sony part owner of Sharp's LCD plant? One big family.

It's like putting lipstick on a pig.

One thing is clear, the Elite brand still has a loyal, interested following. Just look at the amount of people commenting here. Things to consider: 1. Sharp's Kameyama LCD manufacturing complex is the most advanced LCD panel factory in the world and their market share in the very techie world of Japan is much higher than it is in the states. 2. This deal was born in Japan, there has been much collaboration between Sharp and Pioneer for the past two years, not all of it public. 3. It is not in the best interests of Pioneer Japan or U.S. to let Sharp put an inferior product out with their most prized brand on it. If this fails, they will lose more than a little face. 4. Panasonic Plasma TV's have an incredible picture, but their cosmetics (HUGE bezels, odd textures, etc.) will never match the simple, refined elegance that was Pioneer Elite.
Simply put, let's not kill this thing until we see what they have developed. I personally need something to fill the void in my lineup that everyone else has failed to fill since Elite TV's stopped shipping. The VT's from Panasonic are nice, but they don't have the cache Elite did.

So now they decide this..... Conveniently after they "re-structured" me out because it was redundant to have a Flat Panel Technical Trainer without a flat panel line.
