Starpower Takes 2nd A/V Specialty Nod

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 10/12/2009

Starpower, the premium A/V retailer known for its high-end custom home-theater installations and celebrity sports clientele, has earned its second Excellence In Retailing Award from TWICE as best A/V specialty dealer.

The 14-year-old company cultivated its high-profile clients and its reputation as a luxury retail brand through an unerring commitment to customer service and four state-of-the-art showrooms with eye-popping installations that demonstrate Starpower's custom-design prowess.

The latest addition is a 10,000-square-foot showroom and installation center in Scottsdale, Ariz., the first leg in a major planned expansion beyond its native Texas.

The global economic downturn has forced principals Daniel and David Pidgeon (respectively Starpower chairman and a member of the CEA Industry Leaders board, and Starpower CEO and a Home Entertainment Source director) to rein back their timetable, but it hasn't suppressed their optimism and determination. Even a luxury-focused dealer isn't immune to this economy, Daniel said, as the volume business shifted from $20,000 to $30,000 installations to sub-$10,000 jobs. But that has only inspired the brothers to redouble their efforts “and make the customer feel even more special.”

“We went to a very tactical level of understanding our customers' and employees' wants and desires, and became aggressive in areas we weren't to capture market share and take advantage of every opportunity,” Daniel told TWICE. “There's been a shift in dynamic, but no one has stopped watching TV.”
