Altec Lansing Upgrades 2 Speaker Systems

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 9/8/2009

Milford, Pa. - Alec Lansing shipped an upgraded AC/DC iPod speaker system and an improved portable laptop speaker.

The iMT620 at a suggested $149 replaces the same-priced iMT600, both with rechargeable battery and RDS-equipped FM tuner, but the new model adds a handle, Works With iPhone certification, 10 percent more SPLs, longer battery life at 5 hours compared to 3.5 hours, and wider imaging due to speakers spaced farther apart, said product manager Steve Schlangen.

The 620's handle is movable, doing double duty as a carrying handle or as a kickstand, which props up the device on a table. Its remote offers full iPod navigation, whereas the predecessor's remote controlled only playlist selection and navigation within a playlist's songs. It ships September 4.

Previously, the company limited iPhone certification to docks priced at $149 and up, but the company now intends to offer iPhone certification on docks at all price points, said senior VP Bernice Cramer.

In new portable laptops speakers, the company is offering a USB-powered version of its round single-driver Orbit. The Orbit will complement similar model that operates off three AAA batteries and gets audio from a laptop's minijack output.

The new model, shipping Sept. 1 at a suggested $49, features dual-voice-coil driver, stereo amplifier, and PCM DAC. It lays flat on a table or faces up at an angle when propped up by its integrated kickstand.
