Nebraska Furniture Mart Finishes CE-Majap Store Remodel

BY ALAN WOLF -- TWICE, 10/22/2007

Nebraska Furniture Mart has completed its two-year, multimillion-dollar expansion of its appliance, electronics and computer store at the company's flagship location, here.

The 100,000-square-foot facility was completely renovated and updated with such state-of-the art systems as a 200-foot overhead warehouse connector that links the showroom directly to the 651,000-square-foot distribution center.

The store also features more than 200 demo TVs, 600 active video displays and 800 majap SKUs, including 12 fully operational kitchen vignettes. There are also four dedicated in-store shops showcasing products by Apple, Bose, Harmon and Sony; fully-staffed customer areas for service providers Cox and Qwest; and additional check-out stations.

More than 30 jobs were added to help staff the expanded showroom, which the company describes as the largest white- and brown-goods store in the Midwest.

“We are reinvesting in our town with facilities and jobs,” said executive VP Bob Batt.

Nebraska celebrated the completion of the project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month.

The home furnishings retailer was founded in the basement of her husband's jewelry store here in 1937 by Rose Blumkin with a $500 investment. In 1983, billionaire investor Warren Buffett purchased a majority interest in the business, which continues to follow Rose's admonition to “sell cheap and tell the truth.”
