Toshiba Offers HD DVD Rebate

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 5/16/2007

Wayne, N.J. — Toshiba is running a one-month promotion issuing an instant, in-store rebate on select HD DVD players that will bring the purchase price on the entry model down to $299.99.

The effort will coincide with the HD DVD Promotional Group’s new national marketing and retail campaigns launching this month in support of the Warner Home Video HD DVD releases of “The Complete Matrix Trilogy” and “Letters from Iwo Jima,” and the Paramount Home Entertainment HD DVD release of “Flags of Our Fathers” on May 22.

The Toshiba in-store rebate promotion begins this weekend (May 20). Consumers buying a Toshiba HD-A2 model player will receive an immediate $100 instant in-store rebate, the company said.

For the final week of the promotion (June 10-16) the offer will be extended to any HD DVD player Toshiba sells, resulting in prices of $299 for the HD-A2 or $399 for the HD-A20 models. Additionally, during that week consumers can opt to buy any Toshiba HDTV 42 inches and larger along with any Toshiba HD DVD player and receive an instant $200 in-store rebate on the collective purchase.

Toshiba is making the rebate promotion available through a wide range of retailers including Best Buy, Circuit City, hhgregg and Amazon.com.

Meanwhile, the HD DVD Promotional Group is currently running in-cinema HD DVD trailers across a network of 12,000 screens in 932 theaters nationwide to educate consumers about the format and what it offers. Selected theater chains include Regal, AMC and Cinemark.

The in-theater ads are appearing before major summer blockbusters, including “Spiderman 3.” The spots are expected to reach approximately 30 million viewers over its four-week run.

Under a separate promotion, consumers who purchase any Toshiba HD DVD player can also get five free HD DVD titles from a selection of 15 movies. That offer runs through July 31.

“We know that price is a powerful driver for consumers to adopt new technology, which is why our rebate promotion is a great incentive to bring cinema-quality, high-definition movies into your home today,” said Jodi Sally, marketing VP at Toshiba America Consumer Products.
