Sales Surge 27% For Tech & Appliance Retailers Over Thanksgiving, Black Friday

Tech and appliances retailers were far and away the winners of the Thanksgiving/Black Friday sales period, a new report shows.

According to credit card processor First Data, which analyzed purchases across more than 942,000 retail locations, sales for CE and majap dealers were up 26.5 percent over the same two days last year, making it the holidays’ best-performing retail channel.

Average ticket grew by more than $41 to $163.76 for these merchants, which was second only to furniture and home furnishings stores, which snagged $176.85 on average.

The tech and appliance gains also stand in stark contrast to 2015’s more meager holiday haul, when sales edged up only 2.3 percent for the channel, First Data said.

Among the company’s other findings:

*Total retail sales rose 9 percent, essentially flat from last year.

*Online comprised 19 percent of total volume, up from 14.5 percent last year.

*The decision by multiple retailers and malls to remain closed on Thanksgiving impacted sales that day, with momentum resuming at 6 p.m. when many chains opened their doors for Black Friday-eve.

*Thanksgiving aside, most states showed strong brick-and-mortar growth for the two-day period, perhaps driven by the warm weather, with Black Friday being the mildest nationwide since 2011, First Data reported.
