Sony Reveals 20th Anniversary PlayStation4

Tokyo – Sony Computer Entertainment will add a special 20th Anniversary Edition of its PlayStation4 gaming console to commemorate the release of the original PlayStation (PS) on the same day in 1994.

Sony on Wednesday said it will make only 12,300 units of the new edition available worldwide. The number symbolizes the original PlayStation launch date.

The 20th Anniversary Edition console will carry a $499 suggested retail price in North America, 49,980 Yen in Japan and 499 Euros in Europe.

The special-edition console will go on sale in the United States in very limited supply for pre-order via sony.store.com on Saturday, Dec. 6. Consumers will be able to pre-order from a special link that will be announced during the PlayStation Experience keynote presentation on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST, or 10 a.m. PST, via Twitch.TV/PlayStation.

The limited-edition PS4 and included accessories will be offered in the “original gray” color and will be packaged in a special commemorative box.

The original PlayStation was a runaway success for Sony and helped change the gaming industry with advanced graphics, performance and unique gaming titles. Sony said it was the first home console in video game history to sell more than 100 million units in cumulative worldwide shipments.

“The PlayStation4 20th Anniversary Edition is a very special model that is reminiscent of the original PlayStation, which has inspired every other PlayStation platform launched in the past two decades. This limited-edition PS4 offers a great sense of nostalgia to long-time PlayStation fans while also providing a fresh experience to those who never picked up the original console,” said Andrew House, Sony Computer Entertainment president/group CEO.
