Review: Mudita Kompakt

Designed for stillness, not scrolling

We’re often overwhelmed in our hyper-connected worlds, especially with our smartphones facilitating the neverending emails, notifications, social media alerts, constant texts, and messages demanding our attention 24/7. How is it even possible to find moments of peace and focus and reclaim control over our digital well-being when we depend on being connected?

Fortunately, Mudita has introduced the Kompakt, an E Ink, minimalist phone that takes an alternative approach to mobile tech. The Kompakt promises a stripped-down, distraction-free mobile experience aimed at helping users disconnect from digital noise and reconnect with what truly matters. And after spending a few weeks with it, we’re convinced that this is what mindful technology should look like.

Features: A Minimalist’s Dream

Mudita’s commitment to digital wellness shines through in every aspect of the Kompakt’s design. The phone encourages intentional use, nudging users to take control of their tech habits rather than succumb to them. For those yearning to simplify their lives and prioritize mindfulness, this device offers a compelling alternative. As Mudita CEO Michal Stasiuk aptly puts it, “Technology should enhance our lives, not take over them.”

At first glance, the Mudita Kompakt charms with its simplicity. The phone boasts an E Ink display, a stark departure from the glare and constant updates of traditional smartphones. This choice isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a deliberate move to reduce eye strain and promote a calmer interaction with technology. E Ink doesn’t emit blue light and is always comfortably readable, even in full sunlight. It’s easy on the eyes and naturally discourages the kind of compulsive checking that plagues smartphone use.

The Kompakt is also backed by a growing ecosystem of wellness-first tools from Mudita including minimalist alarm clocks and analog-inspired watches that all reinforce the same message: your well-being comes first. The Kompakt functions for multiple days on a single charge, thanks to its long battery life that allows you to spend less time tethered to a wall outlet and more time living.

The MuditaOS custom-built operating system keeps things beautifully simple, offering only essential functionalities like calling, messaging, and a calendar, eliminating the barrage of notifications that often derail our focus. Additionally, the Mudita Center desktop application lets you easily back up your data, and manage your contacts while keeping your information private and secure. It is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Our Testing Experience

We were able to experience using the Kompakt phones for the past few weeks, and it was a challenge to our smartphone addictions – in a good way! We’re so used to checking our phones for everything that going minimalist was like cutting the cord. But after a short adjustment period, the phone quickly faded into the background and we found we weren’t reaching for it every few minutes. We weren’t stuck in endless doom scrolling, and using the Kompakt encouraged us to be intentional with our phone use. We used it when we needed to and then put it down. What an amazing feeling!

The first thing we physically noticed about the Kompakt is the size difference from our Samsung A35 phone. As its name suggests, the phone is compact compared to most smartphones on the market and harkens back to the days before bigger screen real estate was the main feature. It doesn’t take up much space at all, and the compact size makes it easy to carry and access in tight pants pockets and smaller purses.

While a headphone jack is a vanishing feature on smartphones, the Kompakt allows you to leave behind your Bluetooth headsets (totally optional) and use wired headphones once again. Speaking of Bluetooth, earbuds and headsets connected quickly and we didn’t experience any difficulties in that regard. The sound was great for both music and podcasts and the volume from the speaker was loud enough as well for our outdoor meditation breaks.

The included apps work well, and we found that the notes and calendar apps, while focused on simplicity, were fully functional – as well as the alarm and voice recording apps. The meditation app allows you to set specific durations and features a countdown to allow you to settle in without feeling rushed before that first chime rings.

Mudita understands that games are part of life, and we were glad to find a competent chess app included as well. (We definitely need to brush up on our openings!) The flashlight function has warm white and cool white options and shone reasonably well.

While we were considerably impressed overall with the Mudita Kompakt’s features, there were a couple of functions that missed the mark for us. First off, we highly recommend ordering a case with your phone, not only for protection from drops, but the smooth casing of the Kompakt often made us feel like we were holding a bar of soap.

Fortunately, that’s an easy fix as Mudita offers protective cases in six colors, including Sand Beige, Charcoal Black, and Dusty Olive. The cases are crafted from recycled materials and fits the phone like a glove while increasing grip and helps keep your Kompakt safe without compromising its minimalist vibe.

A camera on an E Ink screen is a function that seems odd to us as captured images look like they were pushed through a sketching filter. It can be hard to make out details in photos, and, initially, we missed the camera on our main smartphones while on walks. (There are ducklings at the pond!) We found ourselves not bothering to take photos with the Kompakt, but after consideration, that is probably the point – it’s another way this smartphone encourages being present in the moment instead of seeing life through a lens.

The map app functioned well online and offline, but we experienced lag on data and wi-fi compared to our regular smartphones. But the maps worked and we were impressed with the detail we could see on the E Ink screens, even in full sunlight. The E Ink screen also allowed us to read our favorite ebooks outdoors in the sunlight as well.

Finally, we loved the Offline+ mode switch on the side of the Kompakt. There’s something satisfying with knowing you’re “free” with the tactile push of a switch, and the phone reconnected quickly when we wanted to connect again.

Conclusion

The Mudita Kompakt is a breath of fresh air in a crowded, noisy smartphone market. At $439, it’s an investment, but for those craving real-life presence over digital distraction, it might just be priceless. This isn’t about going off-grid or rejecting technology altogether. It’s about using tech on your terms.

The Kompakt empowers you to set healthier boundaries, reduce stress, and reconnect with what matters most: your time, your people, and your mind. Whether you’re a professional seeking focused productivity, a parent striving for tech-life balance, or simply someone craving simplicity, we highly recommend adding the Mudita Kompakt phone to your lifestyle.
