NEW YORK – International Data Corp. and Gartner Dataquest placed Dell Computer squarely atop the U.S. PC industry for fourth-quarter 2000, with Compaq and Hewlett-Packard coming in a distant second and third.
Data from IDC, Framingham, Mass., and Dataquest give Dell, respectively, 22.3 percent and 20.4 percent of the PC market. Dell significantly increased its lead over Compaq in the quarter, compared with third-quarter 2000, adding almost 5 percentage points to its market share total from 1999.
IDC listed Compaq with a 15.3 percent share and HP garnering 12.4 percent of the market, about the same each had in 1999. The San Jose, Calif.-based Dataquest was a little stingier, with Compaq taking a 13.9 share and HP 11.7 percent.
IDC reported that Dell shipped 2.7 million units in the quarter, up 32.5 percent from the same period in 1999, while Compaq’s unit shipments fell 5.3 percent to 1.9 million.
HP kept up its assault on the top of the list by increasing its shipments 20.8 percent to 1.5 million. Dataquest had Dell driving its shipments up 37.7 percent for the quarter and also had Compaq taking it on the chin, with an 8.7 percent loss on 1.8 million PCs shipped.
Dataquest also had HP performing well, with 1.5 million PCs shipping, up 20.7 percent from 1999.
The disparity between the firm’s figures is due to the methodology used in compiling the numbers. The figures include all PCs, laptops and PC servers.
Gateway and IBM fleshed out the remainder of IDC’s top-five PC vendors. Gateway, like Compaq, had a tough quarter, with its shipment figure falling 6.8 percent to just over 1 million. The company’s overall market share also dipped, about one-half a percentage point to 8.6 percent.
For the first time in almost one year, IBM posted a gain, 7.2 percent, on unit shipments of 744,000 for the quarter, giving Big Blue just less than 6 percent of the market.
Dataquest’s list also ended with Gateway and IBM. Gateway fared a bit worse, with shipments falling off 7.1 percent on 1.07 million units shipped, giving the company 8.1 percent of the market. IBM’s fortunes were on the upswing with Dataquest, as well, as it posted an 8.1 percent increase in shipments for 5.6 percent of the market.
