Verizon Adds 4G Samsung Note 10.1 Tablet

Basking Ridge, N.J. — Verizon Wireless will join U.S. Cellular on March 7 in offering an LTE-equipped version of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, which comes with the S Pen stylus.

The stylus lets users annotate pictures and files with handwritten messages, draw pictures on screen, and preview a file or email message without opening it when the S Pen hovers over the file or message. Apps optimized for the S Pen are also available.

The Wi-Fi-only version of the Note 10.1 became available last year.

Verizon will offer the 16GB tablet in its stores and website at $599 without a contract. Users can add service to their Share Everything plan for $10/month. U.S. Cellular began offering the 16GB tablet on Feb. 27 through its stores and website at $499 when paired with a minimum 2GB data plan and two-year contract.

Availability through Verizon’s indirect channels wasn’t immediately known.

Verizon had announced plans to offer the LTE tablet at International CES but didn’t disclose a time or price at the event.

The tablet features Android 4.1 OS, HD 1,280 by 800 display, 1.4 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 5-megapixel main camera with LED flash, 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, 1080p playback and recording, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 with AptX music codec, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi channel bonding, MHL-enabled video output, and MicroSD slot supporting 64GB cards.

The Note 10.1’s dual-screen capability was recently upgraded to multiscreen capability whose Cascade View lets users display multiple open apps on the screen instead of just two apps at a time. Samsung said it is the only tablet supplier to offer this capability.

The tablets support an unlimited number of apps open at once and viewable through windows whose seizes can be changed by the user. So far, 20 apps have been designed to take advantage of the multiscreen capability, including Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, and Google Maps.

Other Note features include Pop Up Play, which lets a video play anywhere on the screen while other tasks are being used. All Share Group Cast enables sharing of video, photos or files via Wi-Fi to up to five other Wi-Fi devices at a time on the same network, while DLNA-based AllShare technology simplifies the sharing of videos and photos with AllShare-enabled Samsung devices such as TVs. AllShare Play is a Samsung web service that lets users automatically sync content via Wi-Fi and cellular among six devices, including a mix of Samsung mobile devices and client-equipped PCs.
