Toyota To Add Internet Radio Support

Torrance, Calif. – Toyota will offer Internet radio via a smartphone app in select vehicles in the U.S. beginning in 2011, the automaker announced.
In revealing its first partnership to integrate a smartphone app with its OEM sound systems, Toyota said it would offer compatibility with Clear Channel Radio’s iHeartradio smartphone app. The app delivers more than 750 U.S. terrestrial radio stations and Internet-only radio stations via cellular data channels.
iHeartradio apps are available for the iPhone and Android smartphones, but Toyota didn’t say if it would support one or both smartphone operating systems. The automaker said it would reveal more details at January’s International CES.
For Clear Channel, the announcement marks the first time that its iHeartradio app will be adopted by an automaker. More than 10.5 million consumers already use the mobile app, Clear Channel said.
Multiple aftermarket autosound companies already offer head units that control Pandora and other Internet radio apps, and the selection of these head units is expected to grow at CES.
