SanDisk Intros USB 2.0 Card Reader

Sunnyvale, Calif. – SanDisk announced today that it will ship the new ImageMate 6-in-1 memory card reader in October.

The reader has slots for CompactFlash Type I and II cards, SmartMedia, SD/MMC, and Memory Stick. The reader is USB 2.0 compliant but is also backward compatible with computers based on USB 1.1.

As opposed to USB 1.1’s data transfer rate of 12MB a second (Mbps), SanDisk says its USB 2.0 ImageMate 6-in-1 card reader is capable of data transfer rates of up to 480Mbps.

Most new desktop computers are expected to have USB 2.0 by the end of this year with laptops and notebooks incorporating the new technology next year.

The ImageMate 6-in-1 reader also comes with a docking station. For travel, the reader can be removed from the docking station and used with a short cable included with the reader that allows for plug-in to portable computers.

The new reader has a suggested retail price of $49.99.
