Samsung Outfits Cruise Line Ships

Ridgefield Park, N.J. — Samsung Electronics said it is expanding its arrangement with Royal Caribbean Cruises to supply LCD televisions for the cruise line’s growing fleet of ships, including its forthcoming Genesis class.

Samsung said it expects to supply nearly 10,000 LCD HDTVs for placement throughout five of the company’s newest ships through 2010. These will include specially designed Silver LCD TVs that will be customized for Royal Caribbean.

The new Genesis ships will be 40 percent larger than the Freedom-class of ships which are currently the largest in the world.

The two companies began their relationship last year, when Samsung outfitted staterooms and key public areas of five ships with LCD HDTVs. Those ships included Royal Caribbean International’s Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Majesty of the Seas; Celebrity Cruise’s Century; and the new Azamara Journey.

Samsung will begin delivery of the sets this year, and will continue through 2010. Scheduled ships include Royal Caribbean International’s Independence of the Seas and Genesis, and Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice, Equinox and Eclipse models. Samsung said it also plans to outfit other ships as they are renovated, replacing current televisions with new flat-panel models.
