RadioShack, Motorola Form Strategic Partnership

Fort Worth, Texas — RadioShack and Motorola have entered into a five-year “strategic alliance” to develop, source and market new broadband and wireless products and technologies.

The partnership, which will initially focus on Bluetooth accessories, broadband networking, home monitoring products and batteries, is designed to increase consumer awareness and adoption rates of “compelling new technologies,” the companies said.

RadioShack already carries Motorola cellphones and accessories, power devices and wireless broadband home networking gateways and products. But under the expanded relationship, the partners will work together in identifying “new market opportunities” to jointly develop and license connectivity technologies and devices that will be brought to market “in a timely, cost-effective manner” during the early stages of adoption.

The fruits of the collaboration, some with exclusive lead times, will be sold through RadioShack’s 7,000-plus storefronts, although the companies are also exploring “other distribution channels,” the partners said. The chain will also leverage Motorola’s international reach to distribute RadioShack licensed products offshore.

“This strategic alliance will make Motorola innovations accessible to consumers coast to coast, and furthers our vision of leveraging technology to enable incredible new ways of working and playing,” said Motorola CEO Ed Zander.

RadioShack chairman/CEO Len Roberts noted that Motorola’s innovation, global scope, extensive wireless and broadband portfolio “will allow us to develop and deliver cut-through consumer technology solutions.”
