CES 2014 Las Vegas – A curved 105-inch Ultra HD television with 21:9 aspect ratio, Ultra HD TVs with curved OLED displays up to 77 inches, an expanded selection of FullHD OLED TVs, and an expanded selection of Ultra HD LCD TVs up to 105 inches took center stage yesterday at LG’s press conference.
The company also brought its new WebOS operating system to smart TVs, announced its new Ultra HD TVs will support Ultra HD content streaming from Netflix, and teamed up with DISH to offer a Virtual Joey app for smart TVs. The app offers access to and control of the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR — including live TV.
The company also announced that its G Flex LTE smartphone with 6-inch curved P-OLED display will be available in the first quarter from Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile. The curved 1280×720 HD screen matches the contours of the face, and the new Dual Window feature displays separate applications in two windows so users can drag and drop information windows.
The company also detailed its first wireless multiroom-audio products, its first smartphone-connected fitness band, heartbeat-rate sensing stereo earphones, and its first under-TV speaker with embedded Blu-ray player and streaming services.
In addition, the company launched its first all-in-one PC for the U.S., the LG Chromebase, which features Google OS and 22-inch FullHD display.
In the TV segment, the company said its curved 105-inch 21:9 Ultra HD TV, model 105UC9, eliminates black bars on the top and bottom of a screen by matching the 21:9 aspect ratio in which most movies are filmed, the company said. The TV also features 5120×2160 5K resolution and built-in 7.2-channel sound system designed in collaboration with Harman Kardon.A ship date wasn’t announced.
In talking up its OLED plans, LG executives revealed details of the company’s first curved-screen OLED Ultra HD TVs in 55-, 65- and 77-inch curved-screen sizes. They will also feature a new WebOS Smart TV platform, which will also be available in many of LG’s 2014 step-up LCD TV lines. The 77-inch model ships in June.
LG dropped Google TV from its smart TVs to replace it with two smart-TV platforms. One is a basic smart-TV platform appearing in some plasma and LCD TVs. The WebOS platform appears in the 10 series of LCD and OLED TVs.
WebOS offers an app store, advanced graphical user interface, intuitive program recommendations, voice command, universal Magic Remote, and a host of other benefits.
The curved-screen UHD OLED TVs are positioned as future-proof because they can decode the H.264 and HEVC H.265 formats at 30p and 60p.
In FullHD OLED, the company unveiled two new 55-inch FullHD 1080p OLED sets, one with a curved screen and one with a flat-screen picture-frame design. The company launched its first FullHD OLED TV in 2013.
The company also expanded its selection of Ultra HD LCD TVs to six new series and 12 models in screen sizes from 49- to 105-inches. The 105-inch model features 21:9 super widescreen aspect ratio. Many come with Harman Kardon built-in sound system with dual subs and up to 150-watt output.
In its core line of Full HD LED LCD TVs, LG will offer 25 new models across eight new series. Screen sizes range from 22-to 70-inches.
Many of the Full HD LCD TVs feature direct LED backlighting and are up to 30 percent thinner compared to last year.
The company said it would continue to offer value-centric plasma models in both 720p and Full HD 1080p resolution across four model series in 42-, 50- and 60-inch screen sizes.
In new product categories, the company revealed more details about its first two wireless multiroom-audio systems, which uses Apple and Android mobile devices as music sources that stream music to multiple wireless speakers via a Wi-Fi network. Mobile devices also serve as remote controls to select and direct PC-stored music to speakers. The system also accesses streaming services.
The first two speakers in the system are the 70-watt NP8740 and 40-watt NP8540.
In fitness bands, the company talked up a band that connects to smartphones via Bluetooth 4.0, features an OLED touch screen to display text and email notifications and caller ID, and controls smartphone-stored music. It also displays fitness data beamed via Bluetooth from monitors in in-ear Bluetooth headphones.
In home appliances, the company announced:
- a collaboration with decorator and product designer Nate Berkus to develop flagship LG Studio appliances,
- expand Turbo Wash fast-washing technology to more front-load washers,
- ‘’push control panels forward to the front of top-load washers for easier access,
- offer new front-load dryers whose front door opens to the side and flipds down from the top to be used as a chute,
- add hybrid heat-pump technology in dryers to recycle heat to save energy,
- and expand fast Easy Clean self-cleaning technology across the entire line of ranges and microwaves.
