5/12/2004 01:18:00 PM Eastern

Los Angeles — Samsung Electronics used the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) being here to announce its sponsorship of World’s Cyber Games 2004 Final — October 4 to October 10 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

The tournament, which will take place in the United States for the first time, will bring 700 of the world’s top gamers from 60 countries together to compete.

Samsung will also help the WCG award online competitors up to $400,000 in prizes. Beginning May 15, the WCG will stage online qualifier events in the U.S. and Canada each month through August. Online competition will include four games — Half-Life: Counter-Strike (team-based); Unreal Tournament 2004; Starcraft: Brood War; and Warcraft III: Frozen Throne. The top two players or teams in each game in each country advance directly to the WCG 2004 USA Final and WCG 2004 Canada Final.

Casual gamers can also log on to play special Samsung-developed Flash games.

The WCG expects more than a million gamers from around the world to participate in this year's online and offline events. Eight official WCG 2004 games will be played offline this year: StarCraft: Brood War; WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne; Counter-Strike:Condition-Zero; Need for Speed: Underground; FIFA Soccer 2004; Unreal Tournament 2004; Halo (Xbox); and Project Gotham Racing 2 (Xbox).
