OEM Car Monitors To Double: DisplaySearch

3/16/2009 11:38:00 AM Eastern

Austin, Texas — Despite the downturn in car sales, unit sales of automotive OEM monitors for navigation and other functions are set to more than double over the next six years, according to DisplaySearch.

Automotive OEM monitors will grow from 16.6 million units and revenues of $1.03 billion in 2009, to 34.4 million units and revenues of $1.56 billion in 2015, due to growing demand for navigation, rear-seat entertainment and controls. DisplaySearch forecast that 7-inch panels will gain the most unit share, with an increase from 40.5 percent, to 46.2 percent share. The 7-inch panels will also gain the most revenue share during the same period, with an increase from 45.7 percent to 52.2 percent.

By contrast, demand for portable navigation will decline, said DisplaySearch, by an approximate 4 percent cumulative average growth rate from 2009 to 2015.

Also, just more than 40 percent of automotive monitors will have touchscreens in 2009, said the research firm.

The growth in car displays is forecast even as new car production nosedives, said DisplaySearch noting there was a near 60 percent decline in vehicle production in North America in January 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier.
