Logitech Expands Harmony Hub Connections

Newark, Calif. –A firmware update from Logitech upgrades the company’s Harmony home-control systems to integrate with Nest Protect Smoke + CO Alarm and Rheem EcoNet water heaters.

The upgrade is available to owners of the $99 Harmony Home Hub, $149 Harmony Home Control package, and $349 Harmony Ultimate Home package.

The Home Hub, launched last fall, can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi. It features IR blasters to control home entertainment gear and Bluetooth to control game consoles. Via Wi-Fi, it controls home-automation products from such companies as August, Nest, and Honeywell; ZigBee/Z-Wave home-control hubs from Smart Things and PEQ; Sonos music systems; the Philips ZigBee bridge to control Hue LED lights; and the Lutron Smart Bridge Pro lighting-control hub.

Logitech’s $149 Home Control system adds a hard-button remote, and the $349 Ultimate Home adds a touchscreen remote with hard buttons. The remotes use proprietary RF to talk to the Harmony Hub.

With Nest Protect integration, the Harmony Hub can be programmed to have TVs, Sonos systems, and gaming devices automatically power off when a Nest Protect alert sounds.

With Rheem EcoNet water-heater integration, uses can set up a schedule for the water heater or change modes based on a family’s changing needs. When guests stay over, for example, users can put the EcoNet water heater into performance mode.

Sometime in the summer, the company plans to offer a ZigBee/Z-Wave extender for the Hub, which will be able to control compatible ZigBee and Z-Wave home-automation devices rather than rely on a connection to other companies’ ZigBee/Z-Wave-equipped hubs.
