
Some of the most successful chains in retail also have the ugliest stores.
Kantar Retail, a market research firm and consultancy, cited Costco, Dollar General and Trader Joe’s as examples of no-frills businesses that are short on amenities but long on loyalty from value-conscious customers.
Forgoing fancy signage and soft lighting allows the chains to invest in lower prices, Kantar said, and judging by their sales results it’s a tradeoff that consumers of all income brackets are willing to make.
