Amazon is already looking beyond a household robotics program for a possible tie-in with home insurance sales, The Information reported.
The top secret home-bot project, dubbed “Vestra,” portends a kind of Alexa on wheels that would wend its way through your home, keeping a cybernetic eye and nose out for smoke, broken glass, carbon monoxide or anything else out of the ordinary.
The around-the-clock monitoring, coupled with Alexa-controlled smart locks and security cameras, would allow Amazon to offer lower insurance premiums, or so the company’s thinking supposedly goes.
Amazon hasn’t confirmed the report, nor issued any homeowners’ policies thus far, but word of the e-tailer’s interest sent insurance stocks sharply lower today.
