New TomTom, Mio PNDs

Concord, Mass. – GPS suppliers TomTom and Mio are adding new personal navigation device (PND) models for the fourth quarter.

TomTom added the XXL 540S World Traveler Edition as part of a series of PNDs with 5-inch screens. The new model is similar to the XXL 540S that shipped in October, but it adds maps of Europe to those of the U.S. and Canada, and also offers 4GB of memory.

It has TomTom’s map-share technology to allow users to update maps, and it includes IQ Routes that uses historic traffic information to better choose fastest routes.

It also offers advanced lane guidance with views of the correct lane to enter in complex highway junctions, and has 7 million points of interest (POIs) and a foldable mounting bracket.

Mio is offering four basic models, including two to be sold exclusively at RadioShack.

All four units provide text-to-speech pronunciation of street names, and lane guidance. The Radio Shack models — a 3.5-inch Moov M300 and 4.3-inch Moov M400 — offer 4 million POIs while the general models offer 5 million POIs, including the 3.5-inch Moov M301 and 4.3-inch Moov M401. All models also offer speed alerts and permit multiple destinations. The M301 and M401 are shipping now at $129 and $159, respectively. The M300 and M400 will carry prices of $119 and $149, said Mio.
