Sony May Have Ducked Out Of E3 2019, But Microsoft & Nintendo Confirm Attendance

"Always a high point of the year to witness the industry’s creativity"

Sony’s unprecedented announcement that it will not be attending next year’s E3 may mark the company’s first absence in the expo’s 24-year history, but both Nintendo and Microsoft have stepped forward on social media to reassure fans that they will have a presence at next year’s show.

Sony’s announcement follows the cancellation of this year’s PlayStation Experience, too, the fan event usually held in December. It’s thought the decision not to appear at either show could be because the hardware developer is holding back plans to announce its next-generation console.

Even though Nintendo no longer holds a press conference in the style of Sony and Microsoft at E3, it still uses the expo to make some of its biggest announcements by way of the E3 Nintendo Direct broadcast. “E3 is an outstanding opportunity for us to share new games and experiences with fans and business partners from across the globe,” said Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime (thanks, Eurogamer). “Every year, we discuss what will be the best way for us to take advantage of the next E3 show in order to bring smiles to people’s faces.

“A lot to share with fans at E3 2019,” tweeted Xbox boss, Phil Spencer. “Always a high point of the year to witness the industry’s creativity and the energy of the community.”

E3 2018 drew its biggest attendance in a decade after opening its doors to consumers. At the time, Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of ESA, said: “E3 2018 was an enormous success, amplified by the thousands of gamers in attendance and millions more around the world who watched online. E3 2018 reinforced the cultural prominence of video games for a global audience. Congratulations to our innovative exhibitors, members, and partners and to the millions of gamers who celebrated a spectacular E3 with us.”

E3 2019 has already been dated and will take place from June 11th to June 13th 2019, once again at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
