iDevices Readies 1st Apple HomeKit Devices

Siri Control For Devices, Lighting

iDevices will launch its first three Apple HomeKit-enabled home automation products starting this month exclusively through Lowe’s stores and

The long-awaited products are the $49 indoor switch, $79 outdoor switch and$149 thermostat, all controlled via Wi-Fi.

The products join a selection of HomeKit-enabled devices from Ecobee, Elgato, iHome, Insteon, Lutron and Schlage. All HomeKit devices can be controlled from iOS apps and Siri locally and remotely.

The $49 indoor switch is a Wi-Fi-connected smart pug that lets users control and monitor electrical devices plugged into them, including lamps, fans, crockpots, space heaters and the like. It will be available through Lowe’s starting Sept. 28.

The $79 outdoor switch is a rain-tight smart plug with dual outlets to control outdoor Christmas lights, outdoor water fountains, and other outdoor devices that plug into an electrical outlet. It will be available at Lowe’s in November.

With the $149 thermostat, consumers can control and set schedules for air conditioning and heating from an iPhone app and Siri.

The iDevice app available with the devices also controls other-brand HomeKit-enabled products, including the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt.

Like other HomeKit apps, it also lets users create scenes in which the actions of multiple products are grouped together. For example, the company said, a consumer could say goodnight to Siri, and the app will turn off a bedroom lamp and outdoor lights while adjusting the thermostat.

To access HomeKit devices remotely via Siri, a third-generation or later Apple TV is required, the company said.
