El Segundo, Calif. – DirecTV is stepping into over-the-top streaming service, offering an assortment of Spanish-language streaming channels for Hispanics in the U.S.
The satellite-TV provider on Monday introduced its new Yaveo OTT streaming service, targeting Spanish-speaking U.S. residents with a new way to access Spanish-language programming from the U.S., Latin America and Spain.
The service is similar to rival Dish Network’s successful DishWorld online-only service for international expats. The service offers channels from around the world in up to 16 different languages.
Yaveo is targeting only Spanish speakers in the United States with an Internet connection (first on PCs, MACs and Android devices, then closely followed by iPhone, iPad, Xbox 360, and other devices).
The service will charge $7.99 a month, with the first month free. Subscribers are not required to have a DirecTV satellite subscription, and they won’t be required to sign a service contract.
DirecTV said Yaveo will provide thousands of hours of programming including exclusive and hard-to-find content, the latest on-demand movies, and popular TV shows, children’s programming, novelas, music and documentaries.
Customers will also have the ability to stream live sports and entertainment channels such as beIN Sports en Español, Cine Sony Television and ¡Hola! TV.
DirecTV said it plans to expand the content choices in time.
“Yaveo gets DirecTV into the OTT business, and we’re excited to start with a compelling Spanish-language service targeted to the Hispanic community,” said Paul Guyardo, DirecTV chief revenue and marketing officer. “We’ll learn a great deal, use the findings to grow and improve the Yaveo platform, and expand our OTT offering over time.”
Initial channels scheduled for Yaveo include the following:
• beIN Sports en Español • Nick en Español
• Canal 22
• Canal Once
• TMN (The Movie Network)
• Cine Sony Television
• El Garage
• Univision suite of networks
• Video Rola
Yaveo will provide an optimized video stream that adapts to a viewer’s device and broadband connection, DirecTV said.
The service will enable watching a show or movie on one device, pausing it, and then continuing to watch it on another device. Viewers will also be able to stream Yaveo programming on up to two devices simultaneously.
