Canon Aims High With PowerShot Pro90

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. -Canon U.S.A. Inc. introduced the latest camera in its PowerShot series, the PowerShot Pro90 IS digital still camera, at CES this month.

The Pro90 IS is Canon’s first digital camera to incorporate a built-in 10x zoom lens with optical Image Stabilization technology.

The camera, which began shipping this month, is aimed to the photo enthusiast and carries a suggested retail of $1,299.

The 10x zoom lens was developed by Canon exclusively for digital still cameras and is based on its new Image Stabilization (IS) technology announced by the company in May 2000.

The all-glass lens consists of 13 elements in 10 groups and includes two aspherical elements to reduce size and weight while correcting aberrations effectively, Canon said. IS technology minimizes the blur inherent when taking pictures while zooming, resulting in a sharper image when using the zoom lens.

The camera features a 2.6-megapixel resolution, 12 EOS-system-based picture-taking modes, wide exposure sensitivity (equivalent to ISO 50-400), several manual settings, and movie recording and playback with audio.

In addition, it has a variable-angle LCD monitor, full compatibility with Type I and II CompactFlash removable flash memory cards, and a high-capacity lithium-ion battery that can be recharged in the camera.

The Pro90 IS comes bundled with Adobe PhotoShop 5.0 LE, Apple QuickTime 4.1, ZoomBrowser EX 2.5 (for PC) or ImageBrowser 1.5 (for Mac), PhotoRecord 1.2 (Windows only), PhotoStitch 3.1 and RemoteCapture 1.2. An A/V cable, USB interface, remote control, neck strap and 16MB CompactFlash Card come standard with every camera.
