TWICE recently had the honor of meeting with Grace Dolan, President of Sharp Home Electronics Company of America, and Richard Simone, Vice President of Product & Brand Marketing, to discuss the company’s strategic direction, product innovations, and vision for the future. With the retirement of longtime executive Jim Sanduski at the end of March, the company is not just reflecting on its century-long history—it’s positioning itself for the next phase of growth in U.S. consumer electronics and home appliances.

With a renewed focus on innovation, service, and market-responsive product design, Sharp is aiming to strengthen its relationships with retailers, distributors, and manufacturers while delivering solutions that meet evolving consumer expectations.

Grace Dolan

Founded in 1912 as a small metal works company, Sharp quickly established a culture of innovation. Its first major product, the snap buckle, revolutionized everyday convenience. The company went on to invent mechanical pencils, crystal radios, wall-mounted LCD TVs, and eventually became a household name. In Japan, the mechanical pencil is often referred to as a “Sharp,” much like Kleenex or Xerox in the U.S., reflecting the brand’s cultural and technological footprint.

Today, Sharp operates in two primary segments in the U.S.: home appliances and home entertainment. The company proudly maintains the distinction of being the only Japanese brand in the U.S. with a full kitchen appliance portfolio, and many of these innovations are developed locally. A flagship example is the microwave drawer oven, conceived by Memphis-based product developer Harry Hessen. Hessen challenged designers to make the microwave “disappear,” transforming it from a utilitarian device into an aspirational kitchen centerpiece. The microwave drawer demonstrates how locally driven innovation can generate strong consumer adoption and provide retailers with differentiated, high-margin products.

Sharp’s product strategy emphasizes premium features, small-space solutions, and universal design—trends that are reshaping the appliance market. Homes in the U.S. are averaging nearly 300 square feet smaller than a decade ago, and consumers increasingly seek compact, efficient appliances that do not compromise on quality, functionality, or design. Aging populations also demand accessibility and intuitive design, making universal design features a key selling point for multi-generational households.

During our meeting, Grace Dolan and Richard Simone highlighted that Sharp designs appliances to meet these needs while maintaining style, performance, and ease of service—creating opportunities for retailers and distributors to market functional, differentiated products.

Sharp’s 2026 product lineup illustrates this strategy. Microwave drawers now come in black and white finishes alongside stainless steel, feature hands-free “easy wave” operation, and meet ADA compliance standards. Countertop microwaves combine convection with air fry capabilities and a flatbed cavity, accommodating larger pans and easy cleaning with inverter technology for even cooking. Wall ovens, including the Celerity™ High-Speed Oven, which is the only oven with far-infrared heating technology to cook meals up to three times faster than conventional ovens, with no preheating required on select recipes, delivering speed and quality for busy professionals and families.

Refrigeration offerings reinforce Sharp’s small-space and premium approach. Models range from 24-inch bottom-mount and French-door models to larger 30-, 33-, and 36-inch configurations. Features include auto ice makers, garage-ready design, LED interior lighting, adjustable racks, and French doors with optimized storage—allowing retailers to market them as flexible, high-quality solutions for secondary kitchens, game rooms, or downsized spaces.

Dishwashers and ranges continue the premium, practical ethos. The new dishwasher platform emphasizes ultra-quiet operation (as low as 44 dB), adjustable racks, wash zone flexibility, and LED interior lighting, complemented by an 18-inch model designed for small-space living. Ranges feature frame-door professional styling, soft-close doors, premium glide racks, large cast-iron knobs with illumination rings, and advanced cooktop power ranging from 8,000 to 8,700 watts. Both gas and electric models offer clear points of differentiation across entry, mid, and premium tiers, giving distributors and retailers a compelling story to present to end consumers.

Sharp’s market positioning complements its product portfolio. With a new tagline, “In Step With Your Future,” alongside the longstanding “Simply Better Living” mantra, the company highlights practical innovation that meets real consumer needs today. For retailers and distributors, this communicates a clear value proposition: functional, high-quality, and reliable appliances that simplify daily living while supporting attractive margins and repeat business through service and loyalty.

Richard Simone

Customer service is a key differentiator. Sharp has received multiple international awards for service excellence, reflecting the company’s commitment to fast, knowledgeable support and long-lasting product quality. For retailers and distributors, this reinforces brand credibility, reduces post-sale friction, and enhances customer satisfaction—a critical factor in a competitive CE and appliance market.

As Sharp navigates leadership changes, evolving market trends, and the needs of smaller, efficiency-driven households, its strategy remains centered on premium, practical, and reliable innovation. Its comprehensive product portfolio—from high-speed ovens and microwave drawers to compact refrigerators and ultra-quiet dishwashers—is designed to deliver retail-ready solutions that meet consumer expectations.

By combining thoughtfully engineered appliances with award-winning service and pragmatic innovation, Sharp positions itself as a trusted partner for retailers, distributors, and manufacturers seeking products that perform, inspire, and sell.

From a 1912 snap buckle to a 2026 high-speed oven, Sharp proves that a brand can remain sharp for over a century—sharp in innovation, sharp in design, and sharp in supporting the retail ecosystem. For more information, go to shop.sharpusa.com.
