Acer Adds 13.3” Tegra K1 Chromebooks

San Jose, Calif. — Acer America introduced Monday its Chromebook 13, billed as the first such product powered by the Nvidia Tegra K1 mobile processor.

The Chromebook 13 features a 13.3-inch screen, up to 13 hours of battery life per charge in the 768p version, and a thin and light fanless design.

It will be available in two options: one with a FullHD (1,920 by 1,080) display and one with a 1,366 by 768 HD display.

The Chromebook 13 uses the Nvidia Tegra K1 4-Plus-1 quad-core ARM Cortex A15 CPU plus a third-generation battery-saver core to provide up to 13 hours of battery life.

A Tegra K1 processor is a 192-core Kepler-architecture GPU offering advanced multitasking capability when keeping multiple tabs open, playing a video and other functions.

Acer said it expects the addition will bolster its category dominant market share position (46.7 percent of the Chromebook business, according to Acer-supplied data).

“The Acer Chromebook 13 is an ideal device for families who need a new or additional computer to share for school projects, research, entertainment and fun online,” said Sumit Agnihotry, Acer product marketing VP. “The display is large and vibrant, so everything from homework to video is incredibly crisp and detailed.”

Both Chromebook 13 options offers displays with Acer ComfyView anti-glare panels that minimize light reflection.

Both units offer a thin and light design measuring 0.71 inches thin and weighing 3.31 pounds.

They feature built-in fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi with a 2×2 MIMO antenna.

The Acer Chromebook 13 boots up in less than 10 seconds and resumes nearly instantly from sleep mode, the company said.

More than 30,000 free and paid apps, themes and extensions are available in the Chrome web store.

Connections include two USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port. Also included built-in are a 720p HD webcam, stereo speakers and a microphone.

Users can log into their own account to access Gmail, Docs, website bookmarks and other information.

Files and documents can be stored on the cloud-based Google Drive.

The Acer Chromebook 13 also has access online and off-line to growing number of productivity programs, including Office documents and Gmail.

The Chrome operating system is automatically updated to guard against online threats.
