Toshiba CE Unit Posts Operating Income Gain

Tokyo — While Toshiba reported overall lower net sales and a net loss for its fiscal second quarter, ended Sept. 30, its CE-related segment reported a solid gain in operating income.

Toshiba’s consolidated sales were down 7 percent to $18.04 billion for the quarter while its net loss was $258.2 million, half of last year’s second quarter loss. Consolidated operating income was up 1 percent to $6.8 million.

In Toshiba’s digital products operation, which includes TV, hard disk drives and PCs among other CE-related products, it had lower sales but higher operating income. The division’s net sales were down 6 percent to $7.04 billion but operating income was $149.2 million, up 593 percent.

There were solid performances for TV and hard disk drives from the same period a year ago, Toshiba reported. The PC business also saw increased sales on higher shipments in Europe. The mobile phone business saw lower sales and fewer shipments due to a changed sales system in the Japanese market.

In segment operating income, mobile phones performed lower but “the PC business generated higher income and the digital media business recorded a solid performance as TVs improved significantly and moved into the black, and withdrawal from the HD business had a positive impact,” Toshiba said.
