Sony Expands IPTV Features, 240Hz Video

In an unusual move, Sony is using the International CES to unveil the majority of its 2009 TV line up, including a range of models with built-in IPTV functionality previously available only through the optional add-on Bravia Internet Video Link module.

The highlights of the 2009 Bravia assortment on display here are found in Sony’s XBR9 and Z5100 series models. Most of these units incorporate 240Hz Motionflow fast motion processing technology. And built-in Ethernet ports allowing advanced networking capabilities and built in Bravia Internet video.

Sony is also unveiling a line of Eco Bravia LCD TVs in the VE5 series. The three models in the series were designed around energy efficiency, and include a new hot cathode fluorescent lamp (HCFL) technology to reduce power consumption by almost 50 percent compared to traditional cold cathode fluourescent lamp models.

The Eco sets also feature a zero-watt standby switch light sensor and a motion sensor that turns the TV off when no one is present in the room. Sony said the system constantly monitors room motion, and if no motion is detected for a set period of time, the backlight will automatically switch off, followed a short-time later by the set switching into full standby mode.

The VE5 Series will include three models in the 52-, 46- and 40-inch screen sizes. All will be available this summer at prices to be announced, and will feature FullHD 1080p resolution, and 120Hz Motionflow motion compensation technology.

ECO models will also include Bravia Link compatibility, USB input with photo and music playback, Bravia Engine 2 video processing and scaling circuitry, and Bravia Sync HDMI interconnectivity.

The Bravia XBR9 LCD TV series includes four FullHD 1080p models in the 52-, 46-, 40- and 32-inch screen sizes, all of which are slated to ship to dealers this spring at prices to be announced later.

The KDL-52XBR9, KDL-46XBR9 and KDL-40XBR9 models all include 240Hz MotionFlow technology to improve the fast-motion reproduction over 120Hz technologies.

The three largest models also include a Live Color Creation system using WCG-CCFL back-lighting technology, and a built-in Ethernet port. The latter can be used for networking and IPTV programming access using the built-in Bravia Internet Video system.

Sony has a full range of online video, music, print and photo partners offering services that can be accessed through the function.

The sets are all DLNA compliant and include USB photo, music and video players.

The 32-inch KDL-32XBR9, with a smaller screen sizes, offers a 120Hz version of the MotionFlow system and requires the addition of a Bravia Internet Video Link set-back module for Ethernet and IPTV capability.

Sony handles video processing and scaling through its Bravia Engine 3 technology (Bravia Engine 2 technology in the 32-inch model). Sony home-theater components can be control through the TV using one remote via an included Bravia Sync (HDMI-CEC) connection.

Sony will offer three models in its Bravia Z5100 series sets including the 52-, 46- and 40-inch screen sizes.

Available this spring at prices to be announced, the Z5100 sets will all include 1080p resolution and 240Hz Motionflow motion-compensation technology; Ethernet connectivity for networking and integrated Bravia Internet video access; DLNA compliance with USB photo, music and video playback; the Bravia Engine 3 video-processing system; and Bravia Sync HDMI interconnectivity.

Sony’s Bravia V5100 series LCD TV line will also ship this spring at prices to be announced in the 52-, 46- and 40-inch screen sizes. All three will feature FullHD 1080p resolution, 120Hz Motionflow motion compensation, Bravia link compatibility, USB photo music and video playback, Bravia Engine 2 video processing and Bravia Sync HDMI interconnectivity.

The S5100 Series LCD TVs will ship this spring in 52-, 46- and 40-inch screen sizes and feature FullHD 1080p resolution with 60Hz frame-rate processing.
