Sony Adds HDR To Three More 4K TVs

Sony Electronics announced it is bringing High Dynamic Range (HDR) support to three more of its 4K Ultra HD television models.

In addition to the previously announced X930C and X940C models, Sony is adding HDR compatibility to its X850C, X900C and X910C models via a network update, available soon, the company said.

Starting this fall and for a limited time, customers who purchase a compatible Sony 4K Ultra HD TV will receive up to $100 of HDR content including “The Amazing Spider Man 2,” Men in Black 3,” “After Earth” and “Fury,” from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment through the Amazon Video app.

The movies will be the first available from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) in HDR for streaming to consumers’ homes. The movies are also the first feature-length movies available in HDR through Amazon, which earlier this year began streaming the first season of the Amazon Original Series “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle,” as well as the pilot episode of Amazon’s comedy “Red Oaks.” They will be available in HDR through the Amazon app on Sony TVs. Amazon was the first streaming service to offer HDR programming.

HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast to the screen.

“Sony has always been a leader in HDR, from our HDR-enabled professional cameras, to Sony Pictures produced and edited HDR content, to our expanded line of HDR compatible TVs, only Sony can bring you the full HDR viewing experience from the lens to the living room,” said Mike Fasulo, Sony president. “You could say that HDR is in our DNA.”
