Sony To Add PSP Digital Copies To BD Releases

Publish date:

Los Angeles - Sony Pictures Home Entertainment said Monday that it will add digital copies of movies to key Blu-ray Disc releases, which will be playable on Sony's PlayStation Portable. The digital copies will not be playable on PCs or other digital devices, the studio said.

The first Blu-ray Disc titles containing the digital copies are slated to appear Nov. 10 and include "Godzilla" and "The Ugly Truth."

Consumers will be able to transfer the digital copy of the movie to the PSP via the Blu-ray drive on a PlayStation3 console.

Including the digital copy directly on the Blu-ray Disc eliminates the need for Sony to package a separate DVD carrying the PSP digital copy, as it has done in the past.

Sony said the new release of "The Ugly Truth" will also include a separate DVD containing a digital copy of the movie that will be playable on a PC.

In addition to making a recent price cut on the PlayStation3 gaming console, Sony has been seeking ways of enhancing the value of the gaming system to compete more aggressively with Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, while at the same time expanding the capabilities of the Blu-ray Disc format.
