Smartphone Adds DTS Headphone:X

Calabasas, Calif. – The first smartphone equipped with DTS’s DTS Headphone:X  technology became available, but only in China.

Chinese smartphone maker vivo unveiled the XPlay3S smartphone, which renders up to 7.1 channels of surround sound over any pair of headphones. Headphone:X delivers a surround-sound experience from multichannel content but also enhances the listening experience for stereo content, DTS noted.

The technology enables listeners to hear content as if it were coming from multiple speakers located around and above them, DTS explained.

DTS chairman/CEO Jon Kirchner said the deal “presented DTS the opportunity to deliver the first Headphone:X ecosystem to the world’s largest smartphone market.”

Feng Lei, chief marketing officer of the premium smartphone maker, said Headphone:X “enables our new products, starting with the XPlay3S smartphone, to produce an accurate acoustic representation of how content was recorded in studio.”

Headphone:X technology was unveiled at the 2013 International CES. In February, the company announced that Qualcomm would incorporate Headphone:X in its Snapdragon mobile-device processors.
