Pioneer Ships Android-Connection Kit For AppRadio 2 Head Unit

  Long
Beach, Calif. – Pioneer shipped its $119-suggested

CD-AH200C

Android App Connectivity Kit, which connects select Android smartphones to the
AppRadio 2 in-dash head unit to turn the phones into the main source of content
for car A/V systems.

The $499-suggested
AppRadio 2 displays and controls select compatible Android apps running on any
of 15 compatible Android phones. AppRadio 2 also connects to a USB-connected
iPhone 4 or 4S to turn them into a vehicle’s main content source.

App Radio 2, which
shipped in early April, features 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, AM/FM/RDS
tuner, and no CD mechanism. The head unit controls and displays stored music
and photos from a connected iPhone or Android phone as well as content from select
compatible apps running on the phones. The head unit also charges the phones.

The Android connectivity kit connects any of
the 15 Android phones’ Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) or Micro HDMI
interfaces to the head unit’s rear HDMI port.

Compatible phones from HTC are the Amaze 4G,
Evo 3D, Rezound, and Sensation XE. LG’s compatible phone is the Optimus 2X
(P990), and Motorola’s compatible phones are the Atrix 2, Droid 4, Droid RAZR,
and Droid RAZR Maxx. Samsung’s compatible phones are the Droid Charge, Galaxy
Note, Galaxy S II, and Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. Sony’s two compatible phones
are the Xperia arc S and neo V.

Five compatible AppRadio 2 apps have just been
launched for the phones, including Waze, a turn-by-turn navigation app whose
position accuracy is enhanced by AppRadio 2’s built-in GPS antenna. Two other
apps are the AUPEO! Personal Radio and Pandora internet radio apps. DashCommand
displays advanced vehicle and driving statistics. And Pioneer’s CarMediaPlayer
lets users select artist, song, or album by touching, dragging, and swiping. It
also offers alphabet search of music libraries and album view.

In a related announcement, Pioneer said 79
percent of smartphone owners use apps while in the car. The figure is based on
an online survey conducted by Harris Interactive for Pioneer. The survey also
found that the top three most-used apps are maps and navigation at 56 percent,
music at 31 percent, and social networking at 24 percent.
