Nadella Named Microsoft CEO

Redmond, Wash. — Longtime Microsoft veteran Satya Nadella was named CEO today by the company’s board of directors, replacing the outgoing Steve Ballmer.

Nadella, who joined Microsoft in 1992, previously was executive VP of the company’s Cloud and enterprise group. Nadella has spent the majority of his time at Microsoft overseeing the build-out of the company’s Cloud infrastructure that supports Xbox and Bing.

Nadella was also named to the board of directors.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates will also take on a new role. Gates will give up his title as chairman of the board and take on the new position on the board as founder and technology advisor. In this capacity, Gates will assume a more direct role with the company.

Board member John Thompson will take over as chairman of the board of directors.
