Metro PCS, T-Mobile In Merger Discussions

Dallas — Regional no-contract carrier MetroPCS and T-Mobile USA parent Deutsche Telekom confirmed they are in discussions to combine the Metro PCS and T-Mobile businesses.

“There can be no assurances that any transaction will result from these discussions, and the company does not intend to comment further unless and until an agreement is reached,” MetroPCS said in a statement.

For its part, Deutsche Telekom said on its website that it is talking with MetroPCS “with the aim of operating its subsidiary T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS within one company in which Deutsche Telekom would hold the majority of shares.”

The website said “significant issues have not yet been finalized, contracts have not yet been signed and the conclusion of the transaction is still not certain.”

T-Mobile, the nation’s fourth-largest carrier by subscribers, is looking for more spectrum to improve network performance and build out its 4G LTE network. Metro PCS, the fifth largest carrier by subscribers, suffered a 77 percent decline in net income in its second quarter following a first-quarter 63 percent drop.
