MartinLogan Upgrades Two Motion Speakers

Lawrence, Kan. –

MartinLogan

replaced two floorstanding speakers
in its Motion series of speakers to bring the company’s brand to a wider
customer base.

The Motion series, which was launched in
January 2010, incorporate Folded Motion thin-film tweeter technology in lieu of the
company’s more expensive electrostatic drivers. The technology is said to
deliver fast transient response and a surface area that is eight times that of
a 1-inch dome tweeter to deliver high levels of realism, MartinLogan said.

The two new models mark the
beginning of a “full remake” of the Motion series, which are priced less than
the company’s electrostatic speakers, a spokesman said.

The two new floorstanding
speakers are the Motion 20 at a suggested $749 each and the Motion 40 at $949
each. Both models improve performance over their predecessors, in part through
larger drivers as well as through a cabinet redesign, said marketing director
Mark Aling. Both models, which are shipping, are voice-matched to the series’ Motion
FX surround speakers and to a planned new Motion 30 center-channel speaker,
which will be released soon, the company said.

The two replace floorstanding models
priced at $995.95/pair and $1,499.95/pair.

The Motion 20 is 36.6 inches tall
and designed for small- to medium-sized rooms with a recommended amplifier
power of 20-200 watts per channel. It features thin-film 1- by 1.4-inch Folded
Motion tweeter with 5.25- by 1.75-inch diaphragm. Two 5.5-inch aluminum-cone
woofers are housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber. The woofer’s rigid
dust caps reduce cone break-up.

The Motion 40, which is 42.5 inches tall,
makes use of the same tweeter but pairs it with an oversized 5.5-inch aluminum
mid-bass driver, dual 6.5-inch bass drivers, and a rear-firing bass port. The
oversized woofer is said to increase cone area and therefore deliver higher
output and deeper bass performance than the Motion 20. The dedicated midrange
woofer promotes a more open soundfield.

Other features include high-gloss
piano-black finish and five-way, bi-wire push-style binding posts.

The Motion series also includes the
Motion LX16 bookshelf speaker, Motion 4 and 2 compact bookshelf speakers,
Motion 8 and 6 center-channel speakers, a surround speaker and the Motion SLM ultra-slim
on-wall/on-shelf speaker.
