Canon Launches HF G30 Prosumer Camcorder

Melville, N.Y. — Canon USA unveiled Wednesday a new flagship advanced enthusiast-level camcorder featuring a 20x f/1.8 Canon HD video lens, MP4 recording, and built-in Wi-Fi capability with dual-band wireless support: the Canon Vixia HF G30.

It will ship in June at a $1,700 suggested retail.

The 26.8mm-536mm (35mm equivalent) lens was is based on Canon’s professional-level Hi-UD (Hi Index Ultra Low Dispersion) technology to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range.

A new eight-blade circular aperture on the lens is similar to that found in Canon’s EF-series lenses, and produces as natural, smooth out-of-focus backgrounds.

The Vixia HF G30 camcorder has a dedicated manual focus ring as a custom key, a feature commonly found in professional-level video products.

With the manual focus ring, shooters can switch between the focus and zoom feature when using the Focus/Zoom Selection Switch located at the back of the camera.

Adjustments are made with the ring, for quicker and smoother operation in the field.

“The new Vixia HF G30 camcorder opens up new possibilities for advanced amateurs looking to explore their creative potential with professional-level performance and wireless capabilities in a consumer camcorder.” said Yuichi Ishizuka, Canon imaging technologies and communications group executive VP.

Canon increased the HD CMOS Pro image sensor size by 1/2.84 inches over previous models to accommodate the advanced capabilities of the new lens.

The camcorder also includes a new Digic DV 4 image processor and SuperRange optical image stabilization for steady images with low noise and more depth.

The SuperRange feature includes a new Dynamic Mode that is said to “substantially reduce image distortion, even when shooting while walking, resulting in steady video.”

For the first time in the G-series lineup, both 1080/60p MP4 (35Mbps) and AVCHD Progressive (28Mbps) recording options are available through a Dual Recording feature. This allows producing both short clips for online posting or more in-depth video.

The Vixia HF G30 camcorder also supports cinematic recording at Native 24p. For added convenience, two SD card slots are available, while the Relay Recording feature automatically continues to record on the second SD card once the first one becomes full.

A new 3.5-inch OLED touchpanel display utilizes Electrostatic technology to control focus, exposure, and track shooting subjects with the swipe or touch of the display.

A seesaw-style zoom mirrors the design of professional-grade camcorders for greater ease of use.

The HF G30 also features a mini advanced accessory shoe and a cold shoe for external microphones or additional lighting. An audio jack has headphone and microphone terminals.

The Wi-Fi remote feature allows controlling the camcorder remotely using a tablet, smartphone or PC, while the dual-band wireless support (5GHz and 2.4GHz), enables selecting from two wireless frequencies for improved signal strength and quality, while avoiding signal interference.

A Movie Uploader app enables a connection to an iOS tablet or smartphone to save or upload videos previously recorded on the camcorder without the need for extra cables or wires.

The Vixia HF G30 has other advanced features, including manual color temperature adjustment (2,000K- to 5,000K in 100K increments), color bars with test tone, manual shutter-speed and aperture control, and a built-in Remote Control Terminal (which supports LANC protocol).

A new 0.24-inch high-resolution 1.56-million-dot angle-adjustable color viewfinder (CVF) is included with a large-sized eyecup. The CVF can be tilted at a 45-degree angle, improving operation during low-angle shooting.
