Swann is targeting the DIY video-surveillance market with its newest device, the Smart Security Camera.
Featuring 1080p FullHD video, night vision and IP65-rated weatherproofing, the Wi-Fi camera is positioned for both indoor and outdoor residential use. Its 120-degree wide-angle viewing lens enables consumers to capture faces and license plates from multiple angles, Swann noted, while the company’s True Detect heat-sensing technology prevents such false-alarm triggers as pet movement or trees blowing.
Bringing a bit of “CSI” technology to the consumer surveillance market, True Detect employs heat-based PIR (Passive Infrared) motion detection in order to distinguish heat of larger objects, including people and cars. Users can opt to receive iOS and Android smartphone notifications whenever the tech is triggered, viewing real-time video and audio on the accompanying SAFE app.

Footage recorded by the Smart camera is stored both locally on the device and in the Cloud; the SAFE app also provides content review of the past seven days of local video and two days from the Cloud.
A separately sold ExtraSafe plan, meanwhile, provides additional Cloud storage for up to 30 days, with options to pay a $4.99 monthly or $49.90 annual fee. The service also comes with enhanced customer service.
The Smart camera boasts a wire-free design that doesn’t require a DVR or base station, with a rechargeable battery that Swann said only needs to be charged a few times a year. It carries a $149 suggested retail for a single camera, $279 for two cameras, and $529 for four cameras.
In addition to DIY homeowners, Dennis McTighe, Swann VP of Americas, noted that the Smart camera provides an opportunity for renters and business owners who want to avoid high installation costs.
Swann has also begun shipping a variety of accessories for the camera, including a solar panel and an outdoor mounting stand.
The solar panel comes with an adjustable bracket that enables consumers to position the camera in the path of maximum sunlight. It carries a $49.99 suggested retail.
The outdoor mounting stand ($19.99), constructed of weather-resistant aluminum, features an adjustable ball joint for additional viewing angles. It provides a mounting option for consumers who prefer to screw the camera directly to the stand vs. using the standard magnetic mount that ships with the Smart camera.
